How Our Quick Trip to Nusa Penida Stole Our Hearts in Just 48 Hours

Back in October 2021, I began a memorable journey to Nusa Penida with my landlord, Bli Arik Wayan, and two of my good friends, Astri and Lupita. The trip was brief but deeply meaningful, a celebration of friendship and nature that left us longing for more adventures together.

Getting to Nusa Penida
Our journey began on the morning of October 16, 2021, at Padang Bai Harbor. From there, we boarded a fast boat to Nusa Penida. The trip across the ocean took approximately 45 minutes to an hour, giving us just enough time to enjoy the sea breeze and the stunning views of Bali’s coastline fading into the distance.

Once we arrived at Nusa Penida, we were greeted by Bli Arik’s best friend, Bli Gidut (Yudhi), who would be our guide and companion throughout the trip. His warm hospitality set the tone for an amazing adventure.

Exploring the Island’s Gems

Nusa Penida is a treasure trove of natural beauty and iconic landmarks. Our first stop was Kelingking Beach, often called "T-Rex Beach" because of the unique rock formation that resembles a dinosaur’s head and spine. From the cliffside viewpoint, the turquoise waters crashing against the white sand below were absolutely breathtaking. While descending to the beach is an option, it’s quite a challenging trek, and we opted to admire its beauty from above.

Next, we visited Broken Beach (Pasih Uug). This site is named for its natural arch, which looks as though a part of the cliff has "broken" away, allowing ocean water to flow into a natural lagoon. The sight of waves crashing against the cliffs and flowing through the arch was mesmerizing, and we couldn’t help but snap countless photos.

Not far from Broken Beach is Angel’s Billabong, a naturally formed infinity pool carved into the rocks. The water’s crystal-clear appearance made us wonder if it was named after the famous Billabong brand, but in reality, the term "billabong" simply refers to a still water body. However, we didn’t venture into the pool as the tide was rising, and safety always comes first.

Our final destination of the day was Crystal Bay Beach, named for its incredibly clear waters. It’s a perfect spot for snorkeling, offering vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life. While we didn’t snorkel this time, we enjoyed the golden sands and tranquil atmosphere, soaking in the serenity of the island.

Fun Facts About Nusa Penida
  • Rich Marine Life: Nusa Penida is part of a marine protected area, making it a haven for divers and snorkelers.
  • Hindu Culture: The island is home to several significant Hindu temples, including Pura Goa Giri Putri, a cave temple.
  • Unique Wildlife: You might spot the Bali starling, one of the world’s rarest birds, in Nusa Penida.

A Rainy Setback
Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit the famous Diamond Beach due to heavy rain. The slippery path leading down to the beach was too dangerous, so we decided to admire it from a safe distance. While it was disappointing, it gave us all the more reason to plan another trip to explore what we missed.

Though our trip lasted only one night, it was packed with laughter, awe, and moments of connection. For me, Astri, and Lupita, this adventure felt like a declaration of our friendship, a promise of future journeys together. The natural beauty of Nusa Penida and the shared experiences made this trip unforgettable.

Tips for Visiting Nusa Penida

  • Best Time to Visit: April to October offers the driest weather and calmest seas.
  • Transport: Rent a scooter or hire a local driver. I highly recommend Bli Gidut (Yudhi), who guided us during our trip. If you’d like his contact information, feel free to reach out to me via email or DM me on Instagram.
  • Safety: Always check the tide before visiting spots like Angel’s Billabong or Broken Beach.
  • Duration: While a day trip is possible, staying overnight allows you to fully appreciate the island’s beauty.
  • Eco-conscious Travel: Support local businesses and avoid littering to help preserve the island.
As we boarded the boat back to Padang Bai, leaving behind the stunning landscapes of Nusa Penida, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of gratitude and longing. I am grateful for the beauty we witnessed and long for more adventures with people I deeply cherish. Nusa Penida had gifted us not just stunning memories but also a renewed sense of connection—to nature, to each other, and to ourselves.

If you’re looking for a quick escape filled with awe-inspiring views and meaningful moments, Nusa Penida should be on your travel bucket list. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find your own version of Kelingking’s dinosaur or Broken Beach’s magic. Just make sure to bring along your sense of wonder and a heart ready for adventure.
